I’ll be honest about this. I had a bad case of potato chips. How often have you picked a bag from a shelf intending to have just one small handful, but before you know it, you have polished off that entire bag? That was mine.

I would even take the bag, tuck it inside my purse, and pretend it was not there so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat them all in one sitting. But I would still lose. Every single time.

Key Takeaways

Then came a day when I understood that my snacking habits needed a snack accident makeover.

I knew I wanted better for myself, but the thought of eliminating chips was just sinful.

Discovering the Crunchy, Flavorful Goodness of Beet Crisps

Unveiling the Crunchy Beet Crisps biscovered delights.

Beets with chips? That’s preposterous. But bear with me for a second as I’m just about to describe the peculiarity of these seemingly exotic, crispy, flavorful beet crisps that I feel should have been around for some time.

I cannot say that it is the only thing that satisfies the crunch craving; it provides a big burst of flavour.

It is as if you’re eating chips but on an upgraded level; its health benefits have made it possible for me to enjoy a snack without remorse.

Let me explain why I made that change and offer you a chance to make the change, too, with this speedy and healthy Savory Beet Crisp recipe.

The Unhealthy Truth Behind Potato Chips

Before addressing the recipe, let me tell you a little truth about potato chips. They are delicious, but I have to deal with additional challenges.

Chips are practically drugs, something anybody should never even try denying.

They are so good and feasted over in chip form, but your body isn’t thanking you for it.

The Hidden Dangers of Potato Chips

As I have said, let us analyze the very satisfying yet oh-so-worst food for the body.

A potato well, it is not entirely wrong in its raw form. It contains some calories, some bits of nutrients, and even fiber.

A potato has some nutritional value; now, slashing a mangled paper thin and deep frying and salt makes it a disguise danger, resting for, for, the most part, the perfect body quality.

Well, it’s a good thing there is chip oil, especially in bulk supply; it’s contraceptive and saturated in soybean oil.

But most industrial chip oil contains trans fat and saturated fat, which many know increase terrible cholesterol levels and stress the heart.

It struck me that such a thing as a chip high invariably exists exists.

Several hours after giving up chips, I started feeling very heavy, almost sick, and my body was not going overboard with gratitude. He didn’t like this form of my obsession as well.

And then comes the salt. As if potato chips were not salty enough, they already have a lot of salt.

We know that too much salt is harmful, as one may develop hypertension, but this is quickly forgotten while snacking.

This may cause some issues in the cardiovascular system and cause an outbreak of related problems.

Beet Crisps vs. Potato Chips

Between the two, beet crisps are better than regular potato chips. Here’s why:

Comparison Beet Crisps Potato Chips
Calories Lower in calories High in calories
Antioxidants Rich in antioxidants Low antioxidants
Fat Content Lower fat content High in unhealthy fats
Nutrient Density High Low

The Quest for a Healthier Snack Alternative

On top of that, many chips are baked and, therefore, have many artificial flavourings and colours.

There are artificial flavours and colours galore, so you may as well be conducting a science experiment, and, quite frankly, our bodies are not built for stuff like that.

When I checked more about what I was eating, I noticed that ordinary potato chips were causing weight gain, fatigue, and possibly other things

I wouldn’t want to imagine such heart problems.

With this realization, I set out to find other, more beneficial options for my health.

How I Fixed My Chip Habit with Savory Beet Crisp

How I Fixed My Chip Habit with Savory Beet Crisp

I’m not going to lie: when I first conceptualized the idea of developing chips from beets, I met some scepticism within me.

Beets have a powerful earthly essence, and I was unsure how they would work as chips.

But then I decided to do some experimentation, and I did not expect the results that came with it.

Beets: The Nutritional Powerhouse

First things first, beets are nutritional bombast. They pack fibre, several vitamins, and an antioxidant known as betalain, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

It’s like with every bite of every beet chip, it’s packed full of nutrition. With every bite of the vibrant purple chips, you have fun and benefit from all those antioxidants.

Coconut Oil: A Healthier Fat Choice

Instead of deep-frying them in unhealthy oils, I decided to use coconut oil,  which I find healthier. Coconut oil contains MCTs (medium chain triglycerides), which can easily be broken down, and Ayin is energy from the body.

Conversely, MCTs are a by-product of tropical fats, act as a refined energy source, and do not pack depressing aftereffects like the trans fats in ordinary chips. That one was enough for me to sell.

Flavor That Delivers Without the Guilt

What ultimately sold me was the taste. I wasn’t just pouring a hefty salt on these because I thought they were like potato chips anymore.

Instead, I tried using coconut aminos, which offered me a satisfying umami flavour without raising my blood pressure.

I then added something called nutritional yeast, which sounds weird but tastes fantastic, and some fresh rosemary and thyme, which tasted out of this world.

And the crunch? I wanted the taste of beet crisps, and they had that nice crunchy feeling without the oily and salty guilt.

Moreover, they are baked, so I don’t think I need to do an exercise marathon right after snacking on them.

Now that you’re convinced (I hope), let me share the recipe so you can make these at home.

Savour Crisp Recipe

Ingredients

Ingredient Amount
Large beets (organic) 3
Olive oil (or avocado oil) 1 tbsp
Sea salt 1 tsp
Black pepper 1/2 tsp
Garlic powder 1 tsp
Rosemary (optional) 1 tsp
Paprika (optional) 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Finally, preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Get some parchment paper and line a baking sheet with it.
  2. Prep the Beets: Trim, peel, and cut the beetroot into thin slices. I prefer using a mandoline slicer to achieve the rig and proper formality of the slices, which allows for evenly cooked and crunch.
  3. Seasoning Mix: Add minced garlic, nutritional yeast, and dried rosemary or thyme in one bowl.
  4. Coat the Beets: In a large bowl, combine the sliced beets and pour over some melted coconut oil and coconut aminos. Toss reasonably to get good coverage of everything.
  5. Add Some Texture: Mix the unsweetened shredded coconut into the batter. This gives a different taste of nuttiness without using nuts—helpful if you are trying to avoid nuts or are bored with them.
  6. Season: Sprinkle the seasoning mix on the beet slices and toss them so the spice mix evenly coats each slice.
  7. Bake: Remove the beet slices from the water and spread them on the baking sheet in a single layer. Do not place the slices on top of each other. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the edges of the crisps turn slightly brown. Oversee those babies, or they may burn.
  8. Cool Down: Remove the tray from the oven and leave the crisps to cool. As they cool, they will begin to roll crispier.
  9. Serve: Allow to cool and serve in a bowl or plate. Your Savory Beet Crisp can be relished as a munchy snack, colourful accompaniment, or side dish.
